Cleopatra es un nombre griego que significa «el orgullo de su padre». Cleopatra Filopator Nea Thea, Cleopatra VII, fue la última reina de Egipto, de la dinastía helénica de los Ptolomeo, aquella que fue creada por Ptolomeo I Sóter, general de Alejandro Magno. Nació en el año 69 adC (fecha aproximada) y murió en el año 30 adC. Era hija de Cleopatra V Trifena I y de Ptolomeo XII Auletes a quien heredó en el trono a la edad de 17 años, junto con su hermano Ptolomeo XIII (que contaba tan sólo 12 años), que sería su esposo, según requerimiento de las leyes de reinado y sucesión del momento.
